Faroe Islands – 8 days in your own car

Faroe Islands in your own car

8 days (7 nights) INCL. FERRY AND HOTEL

The road network on the Faroe Islands is exceptionally well-developed, making it easy to get around; 80% of the islands are connected by bridges and tunnels. Every visitor should plan their daily itinerary according to the weather, as it can vary dramatically depending on where you are on the islands.

Only you and the weather set the pace for this journey.

We have designed this package to give you the opportunity to experience most of what the islands have to offer – see the suggested itinerary below.

A unique natural landscape, but so much more as well; you can explore the world’s smallest and coziest capital, Tórshavn, the world’s oldest parliament, “Tinganes,” and Europe’s best-preserved old town, “á Reyni,” spared from devastating fires.

Kirkjubøur, with the farm Kirkjubøgarður, has been inhabited by the same family for 17 generations since 1557. Here, you will also find “Roykstovan,” dating back to the year 1050, the ruins of “St. Magnus Cathedral,” construction of which began around the year 1300, and the Faroe Islands’ oldest church – Olav’s Church – from approximately 1250.

“Enniberg” – Europe’s second-highest sea cliff at 788 meters – is also worth a visit.

The Faroe Islands are a once-in-a-lifetime experience; the islands offer unique natural beauty, a rich history, and vibrant cultural life. The ever-changing weather – with rain, mist, warmth, and sunshine – creates breathtaking natural scenery and stunning colors. Combined with encounters with the many hospitable locals, this is an essential part of the experience. There are birds and sheep, untouched nature, and remote villages. There is silence, broken only by roaring waterfalls and the thunderous sound of crashing waves.

Day by day program…

Sunday

After a journey of one and a half days aboard the state-operated ship M/S Norröna, you arrive late in the evening, and your room will be ready at Hotel Djurhuus,

which is located a short distance from the ferry terminal.

Monday

Today’s excursion focuses on the Northern Islands. First, head north to the Faroe Islands’ northernmost village, Viðareiði, where experienced hikers have the opportunity to climb Europe’s second-highest sea cliff, “Enniberg,” and enjoy the spectacular view of Fugloy, Svínoy, Borðoy, and Kunoy.

After visiting Viðareiði, drive across the causeway to Kunoy, where we recommend a walk through the charming plantation.

On your way back to your new “home” in Tórshavn, we suggest stopping by the Viking settlements in Leirvík.

We also recommend taking a detour through the village of Oyndarfjørður to see the peculiar “Rolling Stones” (Rinkusteinar). According to legend, an old witch cursed two pirate ships, turning them into rocks doomed to restlessly sway back and forth on the shoreline for eternity. Additionally, visit the local church, which houses an exquisite altarpiece by the Danish painter Eckersberg.

The accommodation is Hotel Klaksvík.

Tuesday

We suggest a trip to the island of Kalsoy, where you have the opportunity to see the Seal Woman.

in Mikladalur, go on a hike to the Kallur Lighthouse, or visit James Bond’s gravestone at Trøllanes.

Wednesday

After spending two days on the Northern Islands, the journey now continues to Eysturoy.

We suggest taking a detour to the picturesque village of Tjørnuvík,

where we recommend cooling your toes with a walk along the lovely sandy beach. In Tjørnuvík, you can also find traces from the Viking era. We also recommend visiting Saksun,

which is definitely worth a visit – be sure to stop by the church and the Dúvugarður museum. Between Eiði and Gjógv, you will pass under the Faroe Islands’ highest mountain, Slættaratindur, standing at 882 meters. If you’re up for the hike to the summit, it’s an easy to moderate walk, and not least, quite manageable since you are already halfway there when you reach the parking lot.

The accommodation is Gjáargarður.

Thursday

We suggest taking a hike to Ambadalur, which starts close to the hotel. This is a moderate-level hike, offering a journey with absolutely stunning views.

Friday

On this day, you will head west to the island of Vágar.

On Vágar Island, you should visit the villages of Bøur,

and Gásadalur, with the beautiful Múlafossur waterfall,

Múlafossur

Church in Sandavágur

and the war museum.

You can hike the old postal route between Bøur and Gásadalur, which is of moderate to difficult difficulty, or take the hike to the Bøsdalafossur waterfall and the rock formation Trælanípan.

Saturday

We suggest that you take a detour via Vestmanna and take a boat trip under the magnificent bird cliffs to the north of the village.

From Vestmanna, you continue back to the capital, where you will spend your last night at Hotel Djurhuus.

Sunday

Attending church could be a nice idea on this Sunday morning, or perhaps a visit to the islands’ old cultural stronghold, Kirkjubøur, where you can see the ruins of St. Magnus Cathedral, Europe’s oldest inhabited wooden house, Roykstovan, and the church dating back to around 1250.

We suggest you spend your first evening exploring the old town of Tórshavn; visit the Skansin fortress and Tinganes.

and á Reyni.

For dinner, we recommend dining at Restaurant Barbara (fish)

or Restaurant Áarstova (lamb).

The ferry departs at 11:30 PM.

The journey back to Denmark begins, and we at Make Travel hope that you return with many wonderful experiences to cherish.
