6 hours
A trip with a guide to the northern islands of the Faroe Islands.
Your driver-guide will drive you through the old road up in the mountains, where you will see the old NATO station, which today is our prison.
The next stop is in Kvívík at the old Viking settlements.
We continue across the island of Streymoy and pass via Áir – the old whaling station – then to Tjørnuvík, which is one of the oldest villages – dated back to the Vikings – in the Faroe Islands with only 47 inhabitants – with a fantastic beach.
Then we cross the Atlantic Bridge to the island of Eysturoy.
We pass the village of Eiði to get to the beautiful village of Gjógv – just after Eiði we stop at the viewpoint of Risin and Kellingin (The Giant and the Witch).
where the story told is:
Once upon a time, an Icelandic chief witch sent a giant and his wife, a witch, to the Faroe Islands to steal the islands and bring them back to Iceland. Off they went in the dusk and arrived in the north-westernmost part of the Faroe Islands. They decided to tie a rope around a mountain called Eiðiskollur, and pull the Faroe Islands towards Iceland.
They struggled and worked hard to get the rope in place. Their first attempt was unsuccessful because part of the mountain split. However, they were determined and worked all night to make it work.
Like all creatures of the night, the giant and the witch knew they had to hide before the sun came up, for fear of being turned into stone. This particular night, they were so pre-occupied with their task that they failed to notice the first beams of sunlight appearing on the dark horizon. Inevitably, they were turned into stone. Ever since, the giant and the witch have stood, staring westward, longing for their home country.
When we arrive in Gjógv we have lunch.
After lunch we continue towards the North Islands and the first stop is the Faroe Islands second largest city, Klaksvík, with approx. 5000 inhabitants.
We visit the island of Viðoy with the northernmost village of the islands Viðareiði.
Then Kunoy, where we will go for a walk in the small forest and see the largest rock in the Faroe Islands.
After the North Islands, we drive through the newest underwater tunnel – the one with the roundabout at the bottom – towards the capital.
Then to the old cultural center in the Faroe Islands – Kirkjubøur, here to see the old cathedral, Roykstovan and the old church.
You will be picked up at your accommodation shortly before the trip starts, and you will be returned afterwards.
