FAROE ISLANDS in your own car

8 DAYS (7 nights) INCLUDING FERRY AND HOTEL

The road network in the Faroe Islands is very well developed and easy to get around; 80% of the islands are connected by bridges and tunnels. Every guest should plan the day’s program according to the weather, as the weather can be completely different wherever you are on the islands.

Only you and the weather set the pace on this tour.

We have organized this package so that you can see most of what the islands have to offer – see tour suggestions below.

A unique nature, but also so much more; you can explore the world’s smallest and coziest capital Tórshavn, the world’s oldest parliament “Tinganes”, Europe’s best preserved old town “á Reyni” spared from devastating fires.

Kirkjubøur with the farm Kirkjubøgarður which has been inhabited by the same family for 17 generations since 1557 and also “Roykstovan” from 1050, the ruins of “St. Magnus Cathedral” where construction began around 1300 and the oldest church in the Faroe Islands – Olav’s Church – from around 1250.

“Enniberg” – Europe’s second highest promontory at 788 meters – is also worth a visit.

The Faroe Islands are an experience of a lifetime; the islands have unique nature, a rich history and a rich cultural life. The changing weather with rain, mist, heat and sunshine provides breathtaking nature experiences and fantastic colors, as well as meeting the many hospitable inhabitants; an essential part of the experience. There are birds and sheep, untouched nature and isolated settlements. There is silence, interrupted only by rushing waterfalls and deafening surf.

Day by day suggestions

Sunday

After a day and a half on the state ship M/S Norrøna, you arrive late in the evening and your room is ready at Hotel Djurhuus, a short distance from the ferry dock.

On Monday

Today’s excursion is all about the North Islands; first north to the Faroe Islands’ northernmost settlement Viðareiði, where the fit can climb Europe’s second highest promontory “Enniberg” and enjoy unique views of Fugloy, Svínoy, Borðoy and Kunoy.

After Viðareiði, drive via the dam to Kunoy, where we suggest a hike in the idyllic plantation.

On the way back to your new “home” in Tórshavn, we suggest you stop at the Viking settlements in Leirvík.

We suggest you drive past the village of Oyndarfjørður on your return trip and see the peculiar “Rolling Stones” (Rinkusteinar), where legend has it that an old sorceress cursed two pirate ships to turn to stone and forever stand on the shore rocking restlessly back and forth. Also visit the church with the magnificent altarpiece by the Danish painter Eckersberg.

The place to stay is Hotel Klaksvík.

Tuesday

We suggest a trip to the island of Kalsoy, where you can see the seal woman in Mikladalur, hike to the Kallur lighthouse or visit James Bond’s tombstone at Trøllanæs.

Wednesday

After spending 2 days in the North Isles, we now head to Eysturoy.

We suggest you take a detour to the idyllic village of Tjørnavík, where we recommend cooling your toes with a walk on the lovely sandy beach. In Tjørnavík you can see traces of the Viking Age. We also think Saksun is worth a visit – visit the church and museum Dúvugarður. Between Eiði and Gjógv you pass under the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur, at 882 meters – if you want to hike up there, the hike is easy/medium and not least easy, as you are already halfway at the parking lot …

Place to stay at Gjáargarður.

Thursday

We suggest you take a hike to Ambadalur, which has a starting point close to the hotel – this hike is “medium” and will give you a hike with amazing views.

Fridays

This day you will head west to the island of Vágar.

On the island of Vágar, visit the villages of Bøur and Gásadalur with the beautiful waterfall Múlafossur, the church in Sandavágur and the war museum.

You can hike the old postal route between Bøur and Gásadalur, this is “medium to difficult” or the hike to the waterfall Bøsdalafossur and the rock formation Trælanípan.

In Vágar, you will spend the night at Hotel Vágar.

SATURDAY

We suggest you take a trip past Vestmanna on the way and take the boats that go under the fantastic bird cliffs north of the settlement.

From Vestmanna you head back to the capital, where you’ll spend your last night at Hotel Djurhuus.

Sunday

Going to church could be an idea this Sunday morning, or a visit to the islands’ old cultural stronghold Kirkjubøur, where you can see the ruins of St. Magnus Cathedral, Europe’s oldest inhabited wooden house Roykstovan and the church there from around 1250.

We suggest you use this first evening to explore the old town of Tórshavn; Skansin Fort, Tinganes and á Reyni.

For dinner, we suggest you eat at Restaurant Barbara (fish) or Restaurant Áarstova (lamb).

The ferry departs at 23:30.

The trip goes back to Denmark and we at Make Travel hope that you go back richer with many wonderful experiences.
