FAROE ISLANDS in your own car

4 DAYS (3 nights) INCLUDING FERRY AND ACCOMMODATION

The road network in the Faroe Islands is very well developed and easy to get around; 80% of the islands are connected by bridges and tunnels. Every guest should plan the day’s program according to the weather, as the weather can be completely different wherever you are on the islands.

Only you and the weather set the pace on this tour.

We have organized this package so that you can see most of what the islands have to offer – see tour suggestions below.

A unique nature, but also so much more; you can explore the world’s smallest and friendliest capital Tórshavn, the world’s oldest parliament “Tinganes”, Europe’s best preserved old town “á Reyni” spared from devastating fires, the world’s oldest timber building “Roykstovan” from 1050, the ruins of “Skt. Magnus Cathedral from the 14th century and the Faroe Islands’ oldest church “Ólav’s Church” from the 13th century and “Enniberg” Europe’s second highest promontory at 788 meters.

The Faroe Islands are an experience of a lifetime; the islands have unique nature, a rich history and a rich cultural life. The changing weather with rain, mist, heat and sunshine provides breathtaking nature experiences and fantastic colors, as well as meeting the many hospitable inhabitants; an essential part of the experience. There are birds and sheep, untouched nature and isolated settlements. There is silence, interrupted only by rushing waterfalls and deafening surf.

Day by day suggestions

Tuesday

After a day and a half on the state ship M/S Norrøna, you arrive early in the morning to our stunning islands.

We suggest you take time on arrival days to visit Kirkjubøur, the old cultural stronghold of the Faroe Islands, with the aging cathedral, Roykstovan and the church from 1250.

Visit the old part of Tórshavn with Tinganes, the fort Skansin and the district “á Reyni” – you can end with a visit to the Nordic House before heading north/west to “your home” for the next 3 nights – Cottages by the Sea in Sørvágur.

Wednesday

Take a trip to the northern part of Eysturoy; drive past or visit the old whaling station við Áir, the Faroe Islands’ highest waterfall Fossá, the villages Saksun and Tjørnuvík.

Pass Eiði towards Gjógv, where you pass the view of “The Giant and the Bitch” standing free in the sea after being bewitched in an attempt to steal the Faroe Islands for Iceland. Then, between Eiði and Gjógv, you’ll see the Faroe Islands’ highest mountain Slættaratindur with its 882 meters.

According to Guinness World Records, the top of Slættaratindur, Vatnajøkull in Iceland, is the farthest you can see in the world.

Take the zig-zag road from Gjógv down past the village of Funningur before heading back to Vágar.

Thursday

Today’s excursion is all about the North Islands; first north to the Faroe Islands’ northernmost settlement Viðareiði, where the fit can climb Europe’s second highest promontory “Enniberg” and enjoy unique views of Fugloy, Svínoy, Borðoy and Kunoy.

– Then via the dam to Kunoy, where we suggest a hike in the idyllic plantation.

On the way back to your new “home” in Tórshavn, we suggest you stop at the Viking settlements in Leirvík.

We suggest you drive past the village of Oyndarfjørður on your return trip to see the peculiar “Rolling Stones” (Rinkusteinar), where legend has it that an old sorceress cursed two pirate ships to turn to stone and forever stand on the shore rocking back and forth restlessly.

Also visit the church with the magnificent altarpiece by the Danish painter Eckersberg.

Fridays

This is departure day and we suggest you explore the island of Vágar; see the church in Sandavágur, the waterfall Múlafossur in Gásadalur and the village of Bøur before you start your journey to Tórshavn for the 20:00 departure to Denmark.

The trip goes back to Denmark and we at Make Travel hope that you go back richer with many wonderful experiences.
