FAROE ISLANDS by car rental

8 DAYS INCL. FLIGHT, GUESTHOUSE AND RENTAL CAR

The road network in the Faroe Islands is very well developed and easy to get around; 80% of the islands are connected by bridges and tunnels. Every guest should plan the day’s program according to the weather, as the weather can be completely different wherever you are on the islands.

Only you and the weather set the pace on this tour.

Maria has organized this package so that you can see most of what the islands have to offer – see tour suggestions below.

A unique nature, but also so much more; you can explore the world’s smallest and friendliest capital Tórshavn, the world’s oldest parliament “Tinganes”, Europe’s best preserved old town “á Reyni” spared from devastating fires, the world’s oldest timber building “Roykstovan” from 1050, the ruins of “Skt. Magnus Cathedral” from the 1300s and the Faroe Islands’ oldest church “Ólav’s Church” from the 1200s, “Enniberg” Europe’s second highest promontory at 788 meters and Nólsoy with the world’s largest colony of the small storm swallow and in the lighthouse the world’s largest lens of 3 meters and a weight of 4 tons.

The Faroe Islands are an experience of a lifetime; the islands have unique nature, a rich history and a rich cultural life. The changing weather with rain, mist, heat and sunshine provides breathtaking nature experiences and fantastic colors, as well as meeting the many hospitable inhabitants; an essential part of the experience. There are birds and sheep, untouched nature and isolated settlements. There is silence, interrupted only by rushing waterfalls and deafening surf.

Day by day suggestions

Day 1

After less than a 2-hour flight with our national airline Atlantic Airways, you’ll arrive in the Faroe Islands – the car will be handed over from the airport office… and remember it’s a good idea to ask for a map of the Faroe Islands.

For the first two nights, stay at the cozy Guesthouse Hugo, located in the village of Sørvágur west of the airport

We suggest you use the time to explore the area around the guesthouse; the village of Sørvági, Bøur and Gásadalur – from the latter two there are fantastic views of Tindholmur and Mykines.

Day 2

Here we suggest you take a ride on this marvelous vessel – Lakeside.

The boat sails out to the waterfall Bøsdalafossur and the rock formation Trælanípan.

(This must be booked in advance)

Day 3

We suggest you spend the day on the island of Mykines – a bird paradise like no other. You take the boat from the quay in Sørvági at 09:15 and return at 14:00.
(The boat to Mykines operates 1/5-31/8)

After the tour, you’ll travel from Vágar via Streymoy to Eysturoy, where Gjáargarður will be your “home” for the next 2 nights.

On the way to Gjógv you pass the Faroe Islands’ first underwater tunnel, where at its deepest point you are 105 meters below sea level – over the “Atlantic Bridge” to Eysturoy – on to Eiði, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the rock formations “the giant and the bitch” off the northern tip of Eysturoy.

Day 4

Here we suggest a trip to the idyllic village of Tjørnuvík and recommend cooling your toes with a walk on the lovely sandy beach. In Tjørnuvík you can see traces from the Viking Age.

On the way back to Gjógv, we think Saksun is worth a visit – visit the church and museum Dúvugarður. Between Eiði and Gjógv you pass under the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur with its 882 meters.

Day 5

As you’ll be changing hotels again today, we suggest you drive past the village of Oyndarfjørður on your way to Klaksvík and see the peculiar “Rolling Stones” (Rinkusteinar), where legend has it that an old sorceress cursed two pirate ships to turn to stone and forever stand on the shore rocking restlessly back and forth. Visit the church with the magnificent altarpiece by Danish painter J. Skovgaard (the painting was originally painted for Viborg Cathedral). After Oyndarfjørður, the tour continues through the Faroe Islands’ second and newest underwater tunnel to Klaksvík – we draw your attention to the decoration at the bottom of the tunnel; glass art by artist Trondur Patursson.

The next night is spent in the Faroe Islands’ second largest city Klaksvík at Hotel Klaksvík.

Day 6

Today’s excursion is all about the North Islands; first north to the Faroe Islands’ northernmost settlement Viðareiði, where the fit can climb Europe’s second highest promontory “Enniberg” and enjoy unique views of Fugloy, Svínoy, Borðoy and Kunoy.
We recommend a trip to the Faroe Islands’ northernmost settlement Viðareiði.
After Viðareiði, drive via the dam to Kunoy, where we suggest a hike in the idyllic plantation.
On the way back to your new “home” in Tórshavn, we suggest a two-hour cruise out from Vestmanna, where you will take a trip under the towering bird cliffs north of Vestmanna (price per person DKK 450 and must be booked separately).

From Vestmanna you will pass Kvívík, where you can visit the Viking settlements before continuing to the capital.
In Tórshavn you will spend the next two nights at 62N guesthouse.

Day 7

We suggest a full day trip to the island of Nólsoy – the boat departs from the harbor right next to the hotel and takes just 15-20 minutes. On Nólsoy you will experience a journey back in time several decades.

Take the opportunity to explore the island with a local guide and head to the southern part of the island, where you’ll find the lighthouse built of beautifully carved stone – and by the way, depicted on one of the 20 crown coins, it has one of the world’s largest lenses, 282 cm wide and weighing four tons. On the island you’ll find the world’s largest colony of storm petrels – which is why you should visit ornithologist Jens Kjeld Jensen and see all his stuffed birds and animals.
Another attraction is the boat Diana Victoria, located in the basement of the information office – it was on this boat that Ove Joensen rowed the 900 nautical miles from Nólsoy to Langelinie in Copenhagen.

Day 8

The trip goes back to Denmark and Make Travel hopes that you travel back many wonderful experiences richer.
