Experiences in the Faroe Islands

Experiences in the Faroe Islands that are close to nature and culture

The Faroe Islands are made for experiences. Here, nature is not a backdrop – it is the main attraction. Steep cliffs, open spaces, the power of the sea and small settlements provide the setting for authentic experiences that are felt more than seen.

At Make Travel, we put together experiences in the Faroe Islands that provide insight, intimacy and genuine connections to the islands and their people.

Hiking in the Faroe Islands

Cultural history and wildlife

In the outback, you can see how our ancestors lived and coped. Stone outbuildings, boathouses, old field strips(teigalendi), peat huts and peat pits(kráir) tell us how close to nature they lived. There are old in-field fences, sheep pens(geilar), sheepfolds, sheep shelters(ból), sheep houses and fransatoftir, which are ruins of small houses where people hid from pirates in the old days.

Everywhere you go you’ll see free-range sheep, geese, a myriad of plants and the possibility of seeing hares.

In the outback you can also enjoy the rich birdlife. Here you’ll find curlews, snipe, jackdaws, egrets, oystercatchers, avocets, great skuas, ravens and crows.

Paths between settlements

The tours described in this leaflet are all along cairns – the ancient land connections between settlements. Before roads were built, people often traveled on foot between settlements, e.g. to go to court, to shop or to visit the nearest church for a service, christening, wedding – or, on the last journey, carried in a coffin. The paths are marked with ancient cairns. As in neighboring countries, the cairns show the way so that the traveler does not get lost.

The trip out to Bøsdalafossur does not follow cairns, but follows designated footpaths.

The length and duration of each trip is calculated based on normal walking speed one way, excluding footpaths. Here the distance is round trip. Meal breaks and the like are not included.

Take care of nature

Nature is vulnerable and therefore it is important that we all show consideration so that it can continue to be preserved – Follow the cairns and other markings and do not go off the paths, either on cultivated land or in the outfield.

  • Remember to close the field gates behind you.
  • Be careful not to damage cairns, fences and stone fences.
  • Do not disturb sheep, birds and plants.
  • It is not allowed to take plants (with roots), stones, eggs, chicks, etc. with you from the outfield.
  • It’s customary to bring home wool mittens that the sheep have lost from the outfield.
  • Do not leave litter.
  • Watch out for loose stones wherever you go – especially when there are several of you together.
  • Be careful in swampy terrain. It can be deep.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the outfield.
  • Tents may not be set up in the outfield without the landowner’s permission.
  • It is not permitted to ride bicycles or motorized vehicles in the outfield or on the cairns.

The weather decides

  • Check the weather forecast so you know if it’s safe to go.
  • Do not go if there is fog.
  • If you are surprised by fog on a trip, it is very important to stick to the cairns. If the fog is so thick that you can’t see from one cairn to the next, it’s best to wait at the nearest cairn and try to stay warm.
  • Turn around if something is wrong. There is no shame in not completing a trip.
  • Be well dressed, preferably in layers. The weather can change suddenly.

Faroe Islands by bike

First are suggestions for routes that are not very demanding. Next are mountain routes that require a certain level of fitness. The last are long routes where there is a lot to experience, but without overexertion.

The routes are designed to minimize disruption to traffic. Some routes go through tunnels. If you’re not used to cycling in tunnels, consider taking the bus or choosing alternative routes.

Everywhere you go you’ll experience beautiful scenery, changeable weather and abundant wildlife. Enjoy the views at your leisure as you move around the landscape and make unforgettable memories to take home with you.

To get the most out of your trip, there are some things you should take into account:

  • Cycling is not allowed in the outfield or on the cairns.
  • There are no bike lanes – you are close to the cars.
  • Skids in the roadway should be passed with care.
  • Make sure you have enough air in your tires.
  • The weather is both changeable and local. Plan your route so that you have the wind at your back on the return trip. Check with your hotel or tourist information.
  • Be well dressed. Helmet, glasses and gloves are recommended.
  • Sheep roam freely. Watch out when they are at the roadside
  • Nature is vulnerable.
  • Show consideration.

Nature and landscape experiences

The Faroe Islands’ nature is dramatic, raw and ever-changing. Experiences depend on weather, season and light – which is why no two days are the same. Many of our guests come to experience nature up close, either on their own or with local guides.

Popular nature experiences include:

  • Hiking in the volcanic landscape
  • Rocky coasts, fjords and viewpoints
  • Birdwatching at bird cliffs
  • Small settlements surrounded by sea and mountains
  • These experiences are often included as part of our trips to the Faroe Islands.
